Comparative analysis of code-based approaches for seismic assessment of existing steel moment resisting frames

Nowadays, there is a lack of adequate code provisions for the seismic performance and risk assessment steel structures to be used within European countries. At same time, in several occasions, existing moment resisting frames (MRFs) have demonstrated very fragile with respect actions due their inadequate ductility capacity. This combination highlights urgent need an update current Eurocode 8 – Part 3 (EC8?3), thus promoting reliable structures. To this aim, present study provides comprehensive quantitative comparison EC8?3 three versions American ASCE 41 ( i.e., 41?06, ?13 ?17), which are here assumed as reference, they reflect evolution ‘similar’ procedures during last two decades. The capacity values provided by codes different engineering demand parameters (EDPs) significant differences pointing out drawbacks EC8?3. In addition, made assessing MRFs, performing Incremental Dynamic Analyses deriving fragility curves probabilistic approach considers local EDPs compliant codes, that conventionally deterministic studies, e.g., chord rotations beams columns, shear strain panel zones. case studies using code-based i.e. , local) EDPs, provide insights directions revision • Critical limits MRFs EC8–3 41. Comprehensive code-established limits, through case-study MRF Focus on deficiencies addressed updated version MRFs.
